This 5 week tune up will include quick things that you should do to get better data out of Google Analytics. If you haven’t been following along, it isn’t too late to catch up by checking out the other posts. Here’s the latest:
Understanding where your traffic is coming from is critical to understanding your audience. It allows us to create goals around content promotion, membership and growth. We can even develop better websites if we know how people are finding us. There are a few things you may need to do in order to ensure that data is correct.
The other important feature of cross domain tracking is that it allows sessions to continue across multiple websites. This means that a session that starts on your homepage and ends on your donation form can be tracked as a single user and a single session. Doing this properly in the latest version of Google Analytics means that you not only need the code on your site to be configured, you also need to add the correct sites to your property setting in Google Analytics. If you use the station analytics system to manage your tracking, we've already taken care of the tagging, but you will have to add all of your sites to the "Referral Exclusion List" for each Google Analytics property.
