WDET's "Back to Basics" Series and Training Updates

Feb 20, 2013

Happy February all!

This monthly newsletter highlights your digital efforts, provides an inside look at the digital lives of our public media colleagues and lets you know about digital news training opportunities.  We’re putting together resources on digital marketing. Have you used Facebook or Google ads at your station? Email Kasia at kpodbielski@npr.org to share your experiences (and stay tuned for information about this training).

Station Spotlight: WDET

The  “Back to Basics” series is taking an investigative and multimedia look at Detroit’s food economy. It combines shoe leather reporting with data and community participation. WDET reporters visited 240 stores that accept food stamps in search of basic food items like chicken and apples. Check out the resulting map and stay tuned as the series progresses on WDET’s site

Training Update

We are more than half way through our third round of 11-week Knight Trainings. Aspen Public Radio, KBIA, KGOU, KMUW, MTPR, NCPR, WJCT, WUNC, WXPN and WYPR will conclude their training with sessions on photography, and social media.

CPR, Houston Public Media, KCRW, KUSP, Marfa, NET News, WCAI, WKSU, WPLN and WWNO will kick off their 11-week training in March with a three-day leadership conference at NPR West. We look forward to adding them to the #NPRKnight alumni.

WLRN recently participated in a one-week intensive on-site training, which included a photography session lead by Kainaz Amaria. Check out some of the great photos they made (using their phones).

If you are interested in participating in 11-week or on-site training, email your application to training@ds.npr.org. We’re taking applications for sessions that begin in September 2013.
